Cleveleys town centre revamp approved

Plans to make Cleveleys town centre a more appealing place to shop will see more than a dozen on-street parking spaces removed – so that pavements can be widened.

Lancashire County Council highways bosses have given the go-ahead to a major redesign of Victoria Road West.

The time-limited bays that currently line one side of the street – between the promenade and Rossall Road – allow drivers to park directly outside the shops on the thoroughfare for up to an hour.

However, the individual groups of spaces – which can accommodate around 15 vehicles in total – will disappear as part of the changes.

Four of the bays, which are reserved for blue badge-holders under the current layout, will be moved to nearby Bispham Road – but the general spaces will be lost.

A county council report states that the motorists are instead expected to use nearby off-street car parks, which it describes as “the preferred entry points into the town for both drivers and pedestrians”.

The document adds: “[The] primary purpose [of the revamp] is to reduce the volume of vehicles using Victoria Road West, creating a safer and more pleasant environment for pedestrians.

“The plans also include widening pavement areas to enhance the appeal and usability of the town centre for those on foot.”

The electric vehicle charging points opposite Princess Road will remain in place, accessible for up to three hours with no return permitted with two.

Existing loading bays and a taxi rank on Victoria Road West will be unaffected – with a new loading bay also being added along the route.

The bus and coach stand close to the junction with the promenade will remain – and a new one will be installed on Nutter Road.

No start date for the work has yet been announced.
