Dog owners who fail to clean up after their pets could face a £250 fixed penalty notice under new measures approved by Wyre Council.
Wyre Council's Cabinet agreed to renew and update its Public Space Protection Orders (PSPOs) relating to dog control across the borough. The updated orders will help ensure public spaces remain clean, safe and welcoming for residents and visitors, while supporting responsible dog ownership.
As part of the changes, the fixed penalty notice for dog fouling offences will increase from £100 to £250, sending a clear message that dog fouling will not be tolerated in Wyre
Amendments to dog control measures at Mount Gardens, Fleetwood, which will require dogs to be kept on leads at all times, have also been approved.
The PSPOs cover a range of dog control measures, including requirements to clean up after dogs, keep dogs under control and comply with restrictions in designated areas.
Councillor Simon Bridge, Portfolio Holder for Street Scene, Parks and Open Spaces, said: "The vast majority of dog owners in Wyre are responsible and clean up after their pets, but unfortunately a small minority continue to ignore the rules.
"Dog fouling is unpleasant, unsightly and can pose a risk to public health. Increasing the fixed penalty notice to £250 demonstrates how seriously we take this issue and our commitment to keeping Wyre's parks, streets and open spaces clean for everyone.
"These updated Public Space Protection Orders will help us continue to protect our communities while ensuring residents and visitors can enjoy our public spaces safely and responsibly."
The council consulted residents on the proposed changes before bringing recommendations to Cabinet. The new orders will come into force once the necessary legal processes have been completed.
