Drink and drug drive arrests up by 20% as summer campaign gets underway

Lancashire Police say arrests for drink and drug driving have risen by 20% compared to the same period last year.

Since the force’s annual summer drink and drug drive campaign was launched at the beginning of August, there have been 87 arrests made for impaired driving across the county.

Chief Inspector John Jennings-Wharton from Lancashire Police said: ‘’This is clear evidence that there are people willing to take chances, making informed decisions to get behind the wheel of a vehicle and drive whilst unpaired.

‘’This is not acceptable. It may well be that there's a possibility that somebody reading this is that person that gets behind the wheel of a car whilst impaired and drives.

‘’It may well be that there's a possibility that a family member or a friend of somebody reading this gets behind the wheel of a car and drives whilst impaired. What I want you to do is look at yourself in the mirror. What are you doing to help reduce the risk of people being killed or seriously injured on our roads in Lancashire? We need your assistance.

‘’We will act on intelligence and we will stop people at check sites. If you have any information of somebody who is driving whilst impaired then please report it to us. The only way we will tackle this is by working together.’’

If you know someone who drives under the influence of drink or drugs, please call 101 to report them. If you are witnessing a crime in action, always call 999.
