Major electric vehicle plans for Blackpool supermarket

Proposals have been made to install 18 EV charging stations at Blackpool’s largest Tesco store in Marton.

A planning application has been submitted to Blackpool Council for the charges to be installed at the Clifton Retail Park site, off Clifton Road.

The scheme entails installation of the charging stations along with 22 protective one-metre high ramraid bollards, as well as alterations to road markings and the car park layout.

The bays would be located close to the dot-com van and Click+Collect collection bays located in the main car park right near the designated grocery collection point.

At this stage, the application does not stress what the plans would mean in terms of its impact on car parking spaces.

Tesco has stated that it views its electric vehicle charging rollout - partnered with Pod Point and Volkswagen - as a core part of supporting the UK’s transition to a low-carbon future.

The store chain currently operates around 2,700 charging bays across over 610 nationwide stores.

The application for Blackpool was submitted to planners on July 28.

Blackpool Council itself currently operates a number of charging points in its car parks.

There are in the following locations:

Central Multi-Storey Car Park: Chapel Street / Seasiders Way (26 sockets)

Talbot Road Multi-Storey Car Park: Deansgate (6 sockets)

Blackpool Sports Centre: West Park Drive (2 sockets)

West Street Car Park: West Street (3 sockets)
