Manchester-based film fest to stage one-off edition at Blackpool’s 1920s cinema

Blackpool’s original 1920s cinema The Regent is playing host to an international festival of short films which is normally staged in Manchester.

The white tiled Art Deco cinema, on the corner of Church Street and Regent Road, will welcome the special 10th anniversary edition of ‘From the Vaults’ on Saturday October 3, from 7pm.

Among the films being shown is the latest opus from Fylde coast filmmaker Anton Arenko, a quirky and warm-hearted release called Malcolm’s Subject.

This documentary follows Malcolm Wilson, a former campsite owner who after closing his site, sought human contact through his pursuit of UFOs and other phenomena.

Anton, whose other films included a tribute piece to the Fleetwood to Knott End Ferry, called End to End, launched a crowdfunding appeal to get Malcolm’s Subject wrapped up, and was delighted when the campaign raised the £1,200.

This year’s From the Vaults festival will feature a dozen short indie films from around the world.

Festival organiser Andy Green said: “Our Manchester indie film night is coming to Blackpool as part of our 10th birthday celebrations.

“Everyone is welcome to come along to view the indie films, there will be filmmakers there talking about their work, we will have networking time and time available for people to talk about their projects in the works or ideas for next year.

“Due to the age of this building, my apologies but there is no lift upto the seating area. Please be mindful that you will be able to get up to the seating area.”

Anton, who worked with cinematographer Iain Cash on his latest film, said: “I’ve been going to this festival to see these films for years, so to have a film of my own involved is brilliant, especially in a venue such as The Regent.

“I’d like to thank everyone who helped me make my film possible. It should be a brilliant night.”
