New questionnaires on landfill stench give residents chance to log health impacts

Residents who live close to a stinking landfill site in Fleetwood are being given a chance to describe how the issue has impacted on their health in a new survey.

The Jameson Road Landfill Site has been troubling residents for the past two years with vile odorous emissions which have been likened to rotten eggs.

There have been thousands of complaints logged by the Environmental Agency (EA), which is currently reviewing how operator Transwaste has responded to recent enforcement action after the Agency detected odour during a recent monitoring visit.

Campaigners have called for EA to take stronger action and for the site, whose landord is Wyre Council, to be shut down with immediate effect.

Now Lancashire County Council’s Health Protection Team has launched two questionnaires to enable it to gauge how the emissions are impacting people’s Health.

Some people have previously complained of nosebleeds, sore throats, streaming eyes and breathing difficulties, in addition to complaints about the unpleasant smell itself.

County placed a public notice on EA’s Cumbria & Lancashire website, which is the new home for updates on how it is monitoring Jameson Road and other regulated sites such as factories, mines, landfills and agricultural producers.

Lancashire County Council’s Health Protection Team said: “We wish to take this opportunity to hear from members of the general public who live or work close to the Jameson Road Landfill Site.

“Please complete one, or both of the questionnaires below, to provide an understanding of symptoms and those impacts experienced.”

“Both questionnaires will be open for submission until Sunday March 15 2026. An assessment of responses will be made and communicated to the Community Liaison Group, plus made available through the Environment Agency Jameson Road webpage.”

The Daily Tracker Questionnaire can be completed multiple times, as and when symptoms are experienced.

The Health Risk Questionnaire should be completed once, this form covers an 18 month time period.

Meanhile, EA said in its latest statement on its enfrcement action on the site: “We are reviewing Transwaste’s compliance with the Regulatory Enforcement Notice issued on January 30 2026. 

“The notice required specific actions to be completed by 4pm on February 9 2026. Once this review is complete, we will determine the next steps towards a permanent cap of the most recently filled cells.”

The regulatory enforcement notice on Transwaste requires the operator to ensure that areas of the landfill (Cell 5 and Cell 6) are adequately covered to reduce the risk of odour by February 9.

EA said it expected the operator to comply in full and added that it would update its page on the website as soon as it had more information on this.
