Residents urged to view corridor options for East Irish Sea Transmission Project

Fylde Council is urging residents to attend upcoming community information events about Ørsted’s proposed East Irish Sea Transmission Project, which could bring electricity cables through the borough to connect an offshore wind farm to the national grid at Penwortham.

The project would involve laying underground cables from a coastal landfall point to transport renewable energy from the Mooir Vannin Offshore Wind Farm in Isle of Man waters. Ørsted are currently considering two potential cable route corridors through Fylde – one north of Blackpool and one south of Southport – with a final route to be selected later this year based on environmental, technical and community feedback.

Local residents can learn more about the proposals and share their views at the following drop-in sessions being held next month:

  • Monday 8 September, 1-6pm at Southport Community Centre, 99 Norwood Road, Southport, PR8 6HQ
  • Tuesday 9 September, 2-7pm at Marine Hall, The Esplanade, Fleetwood, FY7 6HF
  • Wednesday 10 September, 2-7pm at The Hightown Club, Thirlmere Road, Hightown, Liverpool, Merseyside, L38 3RQ
  • Thursday 11 September, 2-9pm at Hambleton Village Hall, Hambleton, Lancashire, FY6 9BZ
  • Friday 12 September, 2-9pm at Newton, Salwick & Clifton Village Hall, Vicarage Lane, Newton with Scales, Preston, PR4 3RX
  • Saturday 13 September, 11-4pm at Penwortham Arts Centre – ‘The Venue’, Liverpool Road, Preston, PR1 9XE

Councillor Richard Redcliffe, Lead Member for Planning, commented: “While we recognise residents may have concerns about large infrastructure projects in our area, it’s vital that everyone takes this opportunity to understand what’s being proposed and ensure their voice is heard. These early-stage discussions allow our communities to comment on plans before formal applications are submitted.”

The Development Consent Order application is expected in late 2027, with statutory consultation planned for autumn 2026. Full project details are available here.
