A Thornton councillor is calling for a plot of open land to be used as a designated community recreation area after year of campaigning.
Cllr Andrea Kay says the land, on the corner of Bourne Way and Fleetwood Road and sometimes called Bourne Field, should include a children’s play area with benches and footpaths so local people can make use of it.
The member for Pheasants Wood ward says this part of Thornton, which has seen a huge amount of new houses built there in the past decade, is crying out for a decent-sized green space for public recreational use.
She said that the amenity should already have been provided via an agreement with local planning authority, Wyre Council, and the various developers who have built the new homes.
Under a Section 106 (S106) agreement a legally binding contract is habitually drawn up between a local planning authority and a developer, created to make a development proposal acceptable in planning terms.
She says this would allow funds to be allocated for local green space projects, but she argues that nothing appropriate has been done for the amount of houses built.
Cllr Kay says: “I am calling for this piece of land to be turned into an area for community use, before a developer comes along and tries to built on it.
“There have been almost a thousand new homes built in this area, with the various new housing developments, but there are only two tiny play areas which are not big enough.
“The local football clubs have sporting amenities but they are not open to the public on an every day basis.
“That green space needs to be turned into a community area for local people as soon as possible before it is too late.”
