Residents and motorists are being advised of planned highways improvements on Whalley Old Road – a busy route in Blackburn.
As part of the upgrades, a new roundabout and parallel crossing are being introduced on the stretch managed by Blackburn with Darwen Council.
It’s part of a record £15m being invested in improving roads in the borough – believed to be the largest amount ever committed in a single year.
If you live in the area or regularly use Whalley Old Road, here’s what you need to know:
Two-way traffic lights
Monday, October 5 to Sunday, November 15
Temporary traffic lights will be in place to allow the works to progress safely
Please allow extra time for journeys through the area during this period
Full road closure:
Monday, November 16 to Friday, January 29, 2027
Whalley Old Road will be fully closed to traffic from the top of the Sunnybower area while the next stage of the works takes place
A clearly signed diversion will be in place
Access to residential properties and Stonehill Nurseries and Garden Centre will be maintained throughout
Emergency services have been notified
The Council’s contractor, George Cox, began work on the new roundabout earlier this summer. The project has so far progressed without the need to impact the highway.
However, temporary traffic measures and the road closure are now required to allow the next stage of the work to be completed.
A spokesperson said: ‘’As a Council, we’re investing more in highway improvements this year than we’ve been able to ever before with a record £15m committed.
‘’Work on the new roundabout, as part of planned highway improvements for Whalley Old Road, has progressed really well over the summer and our contractor is now ready to move on to the next phase.
‘’To allow this work to be completed safely, two-way traffic lights will be needed from October 5, followed by a full road closure from November 16.
‘’We know that road closure cause disruption, which is why we’re giving residents, businesses and visitors advance notice to help them plan ahead.
‘’A clearly signed diversion route will be in place, and we’ll continue to keep people updated as the work progresses, removing any closure as soon as it’s safe to do so.
‘’We apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused, but these are important improvements to a busy route and will help improve the area for residents and road users.’’
