Burnley has been awarded £20 million through the Government’s Pride in Place programme, with funding from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG), supporting the next phase of regeneration in the town.
The programme will support the development of a new 10-year plan for Burnley and help deliver the first phase of investment, supporting regeneration and placemaking alongside improvements in work and skills, community cohesion, health and wellbeing, safety and education.
The programme has been shaped by residents, businesses, community groups and local partners.
The Burnley Town Board, under the banner of Burnley: Our Town, Our Plan, will help drive the next stage of the programme, bringing together representatives from business, education, culture, faith, the voluntary sector and other partners.
Leon Calverley, Chair of the Burnley Town Board, said: “This is a big moment for Burnley and a real opportunity to build on the work already done by local people and partners to shape a clear plan for the future.
‘’We have heard what matters most to residents and this funding gives us the chance to turn that into action. It is about backing Burnley’s strengths, supporting our communities and making sure local people help shape what comes next.”
Councillor Afrasiab Anwar MBE, Leader of Burnley Council, said: “This investment builds on real progress already being made in Burnley. We have already secured government backing for major projects including the redevelopment of Newtown Mill, improvements through the Town 2 Turf scheme and the heritage-led regeneration that has taken place around Lower St James Street.
‘’This £20 million gives us the chance to build on that work, go further and deliver for communities in Burnley.”
Oliver Ryan MP said: “I am delighted to see the Government approve our Pride in Place plans for Burnley – £20M, now planned out and signed off. This massive investment will build a new Youth Zone among other local programmes.
