A unique charity challenge that began as one woman’s personal mission to raise awareness of mental health is set to become one of Lancashire’s biggest collaborative fundraising events of the year.
The Summer Solstice Walking Challenge, organised by Lancashire Mind and supported by 12 partner charities, is aiming to raise at least £50,000 for charitable services across Lancashire during events taking place in Burnley and Blackburn this June.
Participants are being invited to walk from sunrise to sunset – a gruelling 17-hour challenge designed to test both physical and mental resilience while encouraging open conversations about mental health, wellbeing and the importance of support networks.
The challenge was first created by Lancashire Mind Fundraising Lead Andrea Pollard in 2022. At the time, Andrea was marking her own journey through mental health difficulties and raised £1,500 for Lancashire Mind. Since then, the event has grown year-on-year, attracting more participants, more charities and significantly greater fundraising totals.
This year's challenge will take place at Barden Athletics Track in Burnley on Thursday 18 June and at Witton Park Athletics Arena in Blackburn on Monday 22 June. Walkers can attempt the full sunrise-to-sunset challenge, complete a shorter personal goal, join as part of a team, or simply attend to support those taking part.
Thirteen charities are working together on the project, including Lancashire Mind, Child Action North West, East Lancashire Hospice, Galloways, Healthier Heroes, Lancashire Women, Nightsafe, Red Rose Recovery, HAPPA, Carefit CIC, Shine Coaching, Strength in Struggles and the East Lancashire Down’s Syndrome Association. Organisers say the partnership demonstrates the power of charities collaborating to support communities across the county.
Throughout the day, participants will be supported by volunteers, live entertainment, refreshments and information stands showcasing local support services. Organisers hope the event will not only raise vital funds but also highlight the range of help available to people experiencing mental health challenges, bereavement, isolation, veteran-related issues and other difficulties.
Registration is open now, with individuals, businesses, community groups and schools all encouraged to get involved. Those unable to complete the full challenge can set their own distance or fundraising target, ensuring the event remains accessible to people of all abilities.
Further information and registration details are available through Lancashire Mind.
