Major refurbishment work at Rawtenstall Library is continuing, with the building now expected to reopen in early 2027.
Work to the roof and upper floors of the Grade II listed Carnegie building is almost complete and has progressed largely as planned, helping to protect the long-term future of the historic library.
The next phase of the project involves extensive work to the ground floor, including the careful restoration of the building's original parquet flooring. As part of this specialist process, the flooring must be removed, treated and reinstated, alongside other restoration work required within the historic building.
While good progress has been made, some elements of the restoration are taking longer than originally anticipated.
The library is now expected to reopen in early 2027, subject to progress of the remaining works.
County Councillor Ella Worthington, cabinet member for Civic Pride, said:
"Rawtenstall Library is an important part of the local community, and this refurbishment will help ensure it can continue to serve residents for many years to come.
"This is a crucial stage of the project and it's important that the work is carried out with the care and attention needed to preserve the historic features that make this building so special.
"While the library is now expected to reopen in early 2027, customers can continue to access services locally through our outreach sessions and nearby libraries.
"I'd like to thank residents and library users for their continued patience and understanding while this important work is completed."
During the closure, customers will continue to be able to access library services locally. The nearest alternative libraries are Haslingden, Bacup and Whitworth.
The temporary outreach service at Rawtenstall Family Hub and The Zone (Old Fire Station, Burnley Road) will also continue.
During these sessions, customers can borrow a selection of books, collect reservations, return and renew items, join the library and take part in regular activities and events.
Sessions will continue to run:
- Tuesday: 9am to 1pm
- Friday: 9am to 5pm
- Saturday: 9am to 1pm
All items currently on loan from Rawtenstall Library will be automatically extended until early 2027 and fines will continue to be waived during the closure period.
Customers can also continue to use any Lancashire library or access a range of services online.
