Residents, businesses and visitors travelling through Burnley are being advised of upcoming changes to Manchester Road as part of a major public realm and transport improvement scheme.
From Tuesday 10 February 2026, a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO) will come into effect to allow construction teams to safely undertake the next phase of works. This will introduce a one‑way system running inbound towards Burnley town centre, with an outbound diversion route clearly signposted for drivers.
This work forms part of a wider £55 million investment programme across East Lancashire, one of the largest infrastructure programmes ever delivered in the area in recent decades.
The scheme aims to transform the route between Nelson Square and Red Lion Street by creating a safer, more attractive and more accessible environment for residents, businesses and visitors.
The improvements include widening and resurfacing pavements with high‑quality materials, upgrading pedestrian crossing points, enhancing public spaces with new planting and seating, and making key junctions easier and safer to navigate.
A new diagonal pedestrian crossing at the Grimshaw Street junction will improve safety and reduce waiting times, while accessibility will be strengthened through the introduction of tactile paving and better‑designed kerb lines.
Cllr Brian Moore, cabinet member for Economic Development and Growth, said: “Manchester Road is a key gateway into Burnley, and these upgrades will create a safer, more welcoming environment for everyone who lives, works or visits here.
"The temporary one‑way system is essential to allow our teams to deliver this work safely and efficiently, and we appreciate the patience shown by residents, businesses and commuters during this period of change.
"Once complete, Manchester Road will be a more attractive, accessible and vibrant route that supports local shops, encourages active travel and helps strengthen the town centre.”
