Chorley Council has issued an Emergency Prohibition Order on residential flat due to the landlord failing to meet legal housing standards.
The flat, which sits above a Chinese takeaway was referred to the council following a routine visit by Lancashire Fire and Rescue to the business, who raised concern with the residential property above.
The council’s environmental health team responded swiftly, and on inspection found it not fit for habitation and took robust action to prevent it being occupied.
Councillor Terry Howarth, Executive Member for Homes and Housing said: “We are committed to working collaboratively with landlords to ensure safe, well-maintained housing for all residents.
“While the Council values positive partnerships, it will not hesitate to take enforcement action where necessary to uphold housing standards and protect the health and wellbeing of the community.
“I’m pleased that our officers responded swiftly and took robust action against the landlord who failed to meet legal housing standards.”
The action comes following the council’s decision to adopt a new action plan to raise housing standards, including in homes of multiple occupation, protect neighbourhoods, and support both tenants and responsible landlords.
A further 18 enforcement notices relating to housing standards have been issued to landlords where they have failed to adequately address housing hazards since January 2024.
Councillor Howarth continued: “We are committed to working with landlords and residents to build stronger and safer communities for everyone in Chorley and we are taking a proactive stance to making sure accommodation is safe and well-managed.”
