Leyland council houses now available

Almost two dozen new council homes in Leyland are now available for prospective tenants to apply to live in them.

The properties – 16 townhouses and six apartments – have been built on Quin Street in the town centre as part of Leyland’s ‘Town Deal’ regeneration project.

Applications for the homes can be submitted via the Select Move system – but only until Saturday (1st August).

South Ribble Borough Council told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) that priority will be given to those households with a “defined local connection to Leyland”.

A spokesperson said:  “All applications must be made through Select Move and certain eligibility must be met. The properties will be allocated in accordance with a specific local lettings plan.

“All accommodation will be allocated once eligibility has been established and in a way that makes optimum use of the properties in terms of size and space.”

The LDRS understands the townhouses are three-bed properties and the apartments each have one bedroom.

They will add to the district authority’s stock of council-delivered dwellings, which include those built on the former McKenzie Arms site in Bamber Bridge in 2023.

South Ribble’s Labour leader Matthew Tomlinson said he was “proud” to be at the head of an authority that has “proved to be so proactive in providing the type of houses we all know our community is desperately short of”.

He added:  “These will be genuine council houses, owned and operated by South Ribble.

“Our new Prime Minister is talking about the need for council homes – perhaps South Ribble is ahead of the game.”

Anybody wishing to apply for one of the Quin Street properties must be registered with Select Move in order to make a bid.

The £34m Leyland Town Deal – £25m of which has been funded by the government and the remainder from South Ribble Borough Council – also includes the creation of a new-look market and market square, along with new commercial premises.
