Blackpool trials new bin hubs to support Simpler Recycling rollout

In preparation for the Government’s new Simpler Recycling legislation, Blackpool is set to trial a new waste collection system designed to make recycling easier and more accessible for residents.

Blackpool’s waste collection service managed and delivered by the Council’s wholly owned company ENVECO, serves 72,000 households.

From the week commencing Monday 29 September 2025, ENVECO will begin rolling out bin hubs—a modern, streamlined solution to household waste management.

The bin hubs will replace the current red sack collection system and support the upcoming national requirement for separate food waste collections, which becomes mandatory in April 2026.

Currently around 13,000 properties use red sacks for their weekly waste collection.

Initially, eight bin hubs will be installed on Highfield Road (x2), King Street, Lytham Road, Red Bank Road, Dickson Road, Devonshire Road and Whitegate Drive. Residents moving onto the new system will receive a letter detailing the changes along with a free indoor food caddy and liners to make food waste separation easy and hygienic.

In the first phase 100 properties will move in the trial from red sack to bin hub waste collection.

Each hub will feature clearly labelled bins for:

o    Paper & Card

o    Mixed Recycling (glass, plastics, tins, etc.)

o    Food Waste

o    General Waste

Cllr Jane Hugo, Deputy Leader of the Council (Place) and Cabinet Member for Climate Change: “I am delighted to hear that the first bin hubs will soon be installed across Blackpool. The introduction of hubs will mean that residents no longer have to wait until a set collection day to dispose of their waste. Also, for the first time they will be able to recycle which we know many residents have been asking for.

“This initial trial is in eight locations. We have sent letters to all residents who are moving onto the new system and provided them with all the information they need.

“After these hubs have been operational for a few months we will speak to residents about their experiences before rolling the initiative out across the whole town.

“Increasing recycling rates is vital to help further protect our environment, combat climate change and conserve natural resources so new initiatives that can help us achieve those important goals are a good thing.”
