Campaigners say landfill site is getting higher with waste and should cease

Protesters against a stinking landfill site say the waste deposits are getting steadily higher and have called on the site to be either suspended or closed for good.

The Jameson Road landfill site in Fleetwood has been the subject of complaints about its odorous chemical emissions since early last year.

It has been constantly monitored by the Environment Agency since last year and activities have been suspended on two occasions.

But frustrated residents say that despite the involvement of EA, the site continues to operate regardless and is still producing vile emissions likened to rotten eggs.

There have also been health complaints such as nose bleeds, headaches, sore throats and breathing difficulties which campaigners say are linked to the emissions.

This week campaigner Jess Brown took photos of the site and said she was disturbed by the number of seagulls hovering over the mounds, foul water trickling into the River Wyre and the troubling stench.

The campaigner, from the Action Against Jameson Road Landfill group, said: “What more can we do than send in photos, videos, smell diaries to the council, phone complaints to EA and have our MP Lorraine Beavers speak up about it in Parliament?

“None of it is doing any good because the site is still taking lorry loads of waste every week and the smell is still coming. We’re banging our heads against the wall.

“The land is getting higher and higher with deposits and we believe there may be open, uncovered waste because huge numbers of seagulls are circling over the site.”

The campaigner said EA had not updated residents about the latest monitoring situation since October 6 and residents felt ignored.

She also called on landlords Wyre Council to do more than simply not renew the agreement on December 31 2027.

She said: “We ‘re going to have to put up with this for another two years. The council must find a way to terminate the lease on the grounds that the smell and the emissions themselves are detrimental to the local population.”

There will be another demonstration outside the Jameson Road site, at the junction with Fleetwood Road, on Saturday November 29 from 9am until noon.

Transwaste sends its own update reports near the end of each month.

A spokesman for the company reported that monitoring results for the week commencing October 22 2025 showed that odour levels around the Jameson Road Landfill Site remained “very low.”

It stated: “The majority of observations reported no odour at all, and where odours were detected, they were most commonly perfume (industrial) or sewage rather than landfill-related sources.

“Notably, landfill-type odours (‘rotten eggs’) were not reported at all, despite increased focus on areas more likely to be affected.

“Transwaste continues to prioritise regular monitoring, prompt response to any issues, and open communication with the local community.”

EA said on October 6 that it carried out odour surveys to understand the impacts in the community. Its officers have noted landfill gas odours off site (faint / moderate – persistent). ]

It issued an Enforcement Notice in August 2025 which required an update to the Gas Management Plan and to the Odour Management Plan at the site.

EA said: “We have received the update and will now review it. This will remain a ‘live’ document to measure progress at the landfill.”

Wyre Council is urging residents to fill in diary sheets, available from the council, which it can use to take action under its powers as a statutory nuisance.
