Calls have been made for a world-class arena to be built on the Blackpool Central site, which has been earmarked for multi-million pound regeneration projects.
Blackpool South MP Chris Webb has renewed his campaign for an arena following Blackpool Council’s announcement that two expert development firms have been appointed to help shape new plans for the land and attract fresh private sector investment.
In less than 24 hours of launching a petition for an arena, nearly 1,000 local residents signed in support of Webb’s proposal.
It highlights strong public enthusiasm for an arena capable of hosting major concerts, sporting events, e-sports, exhibitions and conferences.
In his petition, Webb says: “Blackpool deserves a world-class arena that brings major artists, events and opportunities to our town – creating jobs, boosting tourism and cementing our place as the UK’s entertainment capital once again.”
Webb, who has been calling for an arena on the Blackpool Central site since his by-election campaign, first raising it in the House of Commons in October 2024, has confirmed he will share the petition and feedback directly with Blackpool Council and the development partners in response to their call for input from local residents and stakeholders.
The move comes after Blackpool Council’s recent statement announcing that both appointed firms are committed to working closely with the community to “understand the best use of the land to benefit the local economy” ahead of creating a new leisure-led scheme.
The announcement marks a fresh start for the Blackpool Central site, which has long been seen as one of the town’s most significant regeneration opportunities.
The future of the Blackpool Central site was thrown into question following the collapse of the previous developer, Nikal Ltd last year. The firm’s plans included a 1,300-space car park, which opened last year, a 200-bedroom hotel, a 127,000 sq ft flying theatre, two indoor theme parks, a 70,000 sq ft public square and a string of bars and restaurants in the heart of the resort.
When the developer went into administration the future of the cleared site was left uncertain – but Blackpool Council says it is keen to get the proposals back on track.
Local business owner Jason Barr, known as DJ Fubar, has been one of the most vocal advocates for an arena. Following the launch of Webb’s petition he said: “Since the closure of The Syndicate back in 2011, hardly any big-name DJs or major acts have come to Blackpool.
“There’s a huge void that needs filling – we need an arena capable of hosting superstar acts, bands, comedians and big events with at least a 15,000 capacity.
“The site has now been cleared, and with the original developer gone, it’s time to get back to the drawing board. This could be part of the solution to drive footfall back into town. Please sign the petition and help get Blackpool headed in the right direction again.”
Chris Webb MP said: “The feedback I’ve had – both locally and nationally from industry experts – has been consistently positive about the idea for a Blackpool arena and the transformative impact it could have on our town.
“While there are challenges to overcome to make the plan viable, with enough ambition and thoughtful execution, it can absolutely be achieved.
“A multi-purpose arena hosting everything from live music and sport to e-sports and exhibitions would make Blackpool a true year-round destination again – a thriving venue that brings jobs, investment and pride back to our community.”
Webb said he believed that the Blackpool Central site should deliver something truly ambitious and future-facing for residents, businesses and visitors alike.
