An animal sanctuary in Blackpool is racing against time to raise £10,000 in less than two weeks to secure a permanent home for its residents.
Hugo's Small Animal Rescue and Sanctuary, situated at Ridgeway Farm on Peel Road, faces a critical deadline of Monday, 3 February, to gather the necessary funds. The charity hopes to place a bid on a piece of land that will become a "forever home" for its animals.
Bailey Lister, 21, who founded the sanctuary at just 15 years old, described the situation as urgent. “We’ve found ourselves in quite a predicament. Raising £10,000 would ensure we never have to move again, providing a permanent space to continue our vital work,” he said.
Currently, the sanctuary houses a diverse array of animals, including donkeys, ponies, and smaller creatures, many of which have been rescued from neglect or mistreatment. With the help of 12 dedicated volunteers, Bailey, a dog groomer by trade, manages the site in his spare time.
“A lot of these animals have 20-plus-year lifespans, so securing this land is crucial for their well-being,” Bailey added. “Without it, we may face closure, which would be devastating after six years of hard work.”
Hugo’s is unique in the Fylde Coast, offering a safe haven for both small and large animals. The charity’s founder emphasised the importance of public support. “Even just £1 can make a difference. Your generosity will help create a sanctuary where these animals can thrive.”
The sanctuary has launched a fundraising appeal, urging locals and animal lovers to contribute. Donations can be made through their social media platforms and community events leading up to the deadline or you can click here to make a donation directly: https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/help-hugos .
