The M55 motorway between Blackpool and Preston has reopened this morning following an overnight closure caused by a serious road traffic collision.
Lancashire Police confirmed that emergency services were called at around 10.29pm last night (18th October) to the westbound carriageway between junction 2 (Cottam) and junction 3.
Upon arrival, officers found that a Mercedes A180 had collided with a pedestrian in the carriageway.
The pedestrian, a woman in her 40s, suffered multiple serious injuries and was taken to hospital, where she remains in a critical condition. Police said their thoughts are with her as she undergoes treatment.
The motorway was closed for several hours overnight to allow investigators to conduct a full examination of the scene. Lancashire Police acknowledged the disruption to drivers but stressed the importance of carrying out a thorough investigation.
The force has now issued an urgent appeal for witnesses and dashcam footage.
A spokesperson said:
“As officers investigate what happened, we are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision or has dashcam footage from that area of the motorway to get in touch. Also, if you saw the pedestrian near to the carriageway prior to the collision, we also want to hear from you.”
Anyone with information is asked to call 101, quoting log 1461 of 18th October, or email the Serious Collision Investigation Unit at SCIU@lancashire.police.uk.
In an update issued this morning, police confirmed the motorway has now fully reopened and thanked motorists for their patience.
Drivers are being urged to travel safely on their onward journeys.
