Blackpool Transport has been named Tram Operator of the Year at the prestigious National Transport Awards, following a year of major service improvements and the opening of the new North Station extension.
Managing Director Jane Cole said the honour was an achievement the whole town could share. “Following recent service improvements, our tramway is going from strength to strength,” she said. “To win this award in the face of strong competition from much larger networks is a testament to the dedication and professionalism of the Blackpool Transport team.”
Over the past 12 months, the company has acted on customer feedback to refine timetables and improve reliability — catering for both local residents and the millions of visitors who travel to the Fylde coast each year for the summer season and the famous illuminations.
These changes have led to a significant rise in passenger numbers and stronger operational performance. The operator says the improvements lay firm foundations for the future, including a review of ticketing options, continued investment in tram and stop presentation, and better links with other forms of public transport.
Judges praised Blackpool Transport for its detailed analysis of travel patterns and its innovative fare offers, alongside the success of its new Sales Team.
“We’ve come a long way together over the past year,” Ms Cole added. “I’d like to thank everyone for their hard work and commitment as we continue to improve our award-winning tramway.”
The company’s new Sales Team also earned national recognition, being highly commended in the Best Customer Initiative category at the Global Light Rail Awards in London last week.
