Work is set to begin on the long-awaited transformation of Clifton Street in Lytham, with essential tree care marking the first stage of a major town centre investment.
From Monday, arborists will begin carefully pruning 28 London Plane trees along the historic street.
The work forms the opening phase of a £292,495 improvement scheme led by Fylde Council, which will also see the installation of new heritage-style lighting later this year.
Council officials say the pruning is vital to ensure the trees continue to thrive for generations to come, while preparing the street for further enhancements designed to boost the town centre’s appearance and appeal.
The council has been working closely with residents and businesses along Clifton Street and has contacted those directly affected by the works. Traffic and pedestrian management measures will be in place throughout the programme to ensure safety and maintain access to shops and homes. The tree care phase is expected to be completed by February, with minimal disruption.
Once the pruning is complete, the next stage of the project will begin in March, with the installation of elegant new heritage-style lighting columns. The designs will feature the Clifton family crest alongside decorative oak and elm motifs, celebrating Lytham’s rich history and architectural heritage.
Leader of Fylde Council Karen Buckley said the works marked an important milestone for the town.
“We’re delighted to see this transformation taking shape,” she said. “By caring for our trees first, we’re ensuring Clifton Street retains its natural charm while preparing for the beautiful new lighting that will brighten our town centre. Thank you to residents and businesses for their patience as we create something truly special for Lytham.”
Lytham Town Council councillor Catherine Powell added that the project highlighted the benefits of partnership working.
“This investment in Clifton Street demonstrates what we can achieve when councils work together for our community,” she said. “These improvements will enhance our beautiful town centre, support our independent businesses and create an even more welcoming environment for everyone who lives in, works in and visits Lytham.”
