Some lorry drivers appear to be struggling with the design of a newly-opened £18.5million access road which provides a vital link to Blackpool Airport Enterprise Zone.
Film footage shot by a Blackpool-based YouTuber shows three heavy goods vehicles failing to negotiate a tight, right-hand turn onto the brand new Vickers Way, then having to stop before successfully making the manoeuvre.
The road, which only opened this week, is a much vaunted project from Blackpool Council aimed at improving connectivity for businesses and residents while helping to ease congestion on surrounding roads, including School Road.
It also provides direct access to the Common Edge Community Sports Village, which has seen growing demand since opening in 2023.
The footage of film shot by video creator Walk on the Wild Side stated: “Mayhem at Blackpool’s newest junction as some large trucks fail to make the tight turn in one go onto the new Airport Enterprise Zone link road.”
People who commented on the video questioned the design of the road and its junction with Common Edge Road as drivers had to loop back on themselves to negotiate the turn.
For smaller vehicles there was no issue but the film footage caught three heavy goods vehicles failing to make it.
The film-maker stated, after another truck struggled: “This seems to be a bit of a problem. I think they’re going to have to look into this.”
The road has taken 18 months to build and was backed by a £7.5m UK Government Town Deal grant .
Blackpool Council was approached for a comment over the footage.
Cllr Mark Smith, Blackpool Council’s Cabinet Member for Economy and Built Environment, previously said: “This is a major milestone for Blackpool.
We have invested in a new road that eases congestion, supports business growth and will create jobs for local people. It’s all part of this council’s plan to make Blackpool better for the people who live here.
“This is more than just the opening of a new road; we’re unlocking opportunities. By improving connectivity and supporting long‑term economic growth, we’re delivering real benefits for residents through new jobs, skills and investment in the area.”
