Burnley has celebrated a proud new chapter in its civic history as the town formally marked its affiliation with HMS Active, the Royal Navy’s second Type 31 Inspiration Class frigate.
The Worshipful the Mayor of Burnley hosted a special event at Burnley Town Hall, bringing together civic representatives, invited guests and members of the Royal Navy to celebrate the formal affiliation between Burnley and HMS Active.
The affiliation, approved by the First Sea Lord, marks the beginning of a lasting relationship between the town and the ship’s company.
During the event, Commodore Tom Knowles formally confirmed the affiliation and presented the certificate to the Mayor of Burnley, officially marking the start of the relationship between Burnley and HMS Active.
HMS Active is one of five modern Type 31 frigates being built for the Royal Navy. Designed to support operations across the globe, the ship will play an important role in maritime security, defence engagement and humanitarian support.
The event celebrated Burnley’s honour in becoming formally affiliated with the ship, which will proudly represent the town throughout her years of service.
The Mayor of Burnley said: “This was a proud and historic moment for Burnley. We are honoured to be formally affiliated with HMS Active and to begin what we hope will be a long and meaningful relationship with the ship and her company.
“Burnley has a strong civic identity and a proud tradition of service, community and resilience. It is fitting that our town will now be connected with a modern Royal Navy vessel that will represent those same values on the world stage.
“It was a pleasure to welcome Commodore Tom Knowles and representatives from the Royal Navy to Burnley Town Hall, and to celebrate the start of this special affiliation.”
