East Lancs man sentenced after driving more than 150mph on M65

A teenager from Haslingden has been sentenced after driving in excess of 150mph on the M65 earlier this year.

Talib Khan has been sentenced after officers were on patrol on the M65, when they spotted a black BMW 320 speeding on the eastbound carriageway near to junctions three and four. That car was being driven by Khan, with four passengers in.

Khan drove incredibly dangerously, reaching speeds of 151mph and on two separate occasions squeezed his way through traffic on a two-lane section of the motorway at over 100mph.

At junction eight, officers deployed a stinger device, designed to puncture the tyres of the offending vehicle and bring it safely to a stop. Khan tried as he might to continue to drive at speeds more than 100mph on punctured tyres, and later just wheel rims as one of the tyres flew from his car. Once his car couldn’t continue, Khan stopped.

Khan was arrested at the scene, where it was discovered that two of his four passengers were minors.

After giving a no comment interview to officers, Khan, 19 of Victoria Court, Haslingden was charged with failing to stop, dangerous driving, driving without a license and driving without insurance.

He pleaded guilty and appeared at Burnley Crown Court earlier this month, where he was given a 12-month sentence suspended for 20 months as well as being banned from driving for two years and six months, and given 250 hours community service.

Inspector Danny Clough of the Road Policing Unit said: “Talib Khan made a decision that day to drive dangerously. That decision could have had a far more devastating outcome, thankfully no one was hurt by Khan’s recklessness.

“Watching the dashcam footage of the pursuit will understandably be shocking to some. If you are someone who thinks it is ok to drive dangerously, watch the video. This standard of driving is not and never will be acceptable. It is criminal, it is dangerous and it does take lives.

“I hope that Khan can now reflect on his actions and realise just how dangerous they were.
