Blackburn with Darwen, Hyndburn, and Pendle Councils have each been awarded a £270,000 grant to improve playgrounds.
Now they will decide how and where to spend it.
The money is additional funding from the Government’s £18 million Playgrounds Fund, aimed at improving play areas for local communities.
Over the coming weeks, councillors and officers from the three authorities will work to identify priority sites and develop proposals for how the funding will be allocated.
These proposals will then be submitted to the government as part of the next stage of the programme
Blackburn with Darwen Council environment and communities boss Cllr Jim Smith said: “We have received notification from the government that we are to receive up to £270,000 to improve three playgrounds in the borough.
“Over the last couple of years, we’ve made some huge improvements to our play areas, including those in Bold Venture Park, Whitehall Park and on Calder Street; and we welcome this funding to ensure that even more play areas can be upgraded.
“Once more information is received from the government on the conditions and process for any submissions, we will of course be submitting an expression of interest in the hope that we can obtain the funding so the borough’s children and young people can directly benefit from it.”
Cllr Stewart Eaves, Hyndburn Council’s Environment boss, said: “This additional funding is fantastic news for our borough.
“It will enable us to carry out more play improvements across the borough, encouraging local families to go out and enjoy of our much-loved green spaces here in Hyndburn.
“Funding like this is key for increasing access to play spaces and enhancing the experience of residents in the surrounding areas.”.
He added that this latest funding builds on Hyndburn Council’s programme of investment in parks and open spaces.
Recent and current projects include completed improvements at Rhyddings Park in Oswaldtwistle, works underway at Knuzden Play Area, and planned upgrades at Gatty Park in Accrington to commence imminently.
A Pendle Council spokeswoman said: “We will receive up to £270,000 to improve or create three playgrounds.”
The new £18m Playground Fund is an expansion of the government’s flagship Pride in Place strategy.
