Improvements to Colne bus station will get underway next week, marking the first phase of a major scheme to upgrade facilities and improve access for passengers.
Work begins on Monday 19 January and is expected to take around 10 weeks.
Lancashire County Council, as the Local Transport Authority, is fully funding the improvements through its Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP). The project also aligns with Pendle Borough Council’s wider town centre regeneration ambitions.
Phase one will see Colne bus station transformed with five bays instead of three, new shelters featuring real-time passenger information, and improved pedestrian access.
One of the first steps will be removing the old clock, marking the start of a new chapter for the station.
While the bus station is closed, temporary stops will be provided on Craddock Road, with limited waiting bays suspended to accommodate them. As part of preparations, Pendle Borough Council has already demolished a disused public toilet block on the site.
Future phases will focus on improving traffic flow and pedestrian access around the station, including changes to nearby junctions and crossings. More details will be shared as plans progress.
County Councillor Warren Goldsworthy said:
“As the Local Transport Authority, we are committed to investing in high‑quality public transport infrastructure that makes everyday travel easier, safer and more reliable for residents and visitors.
"This upgrade to Colne bus station is a significant step forward and is being delivered through our Bus Service Improvement Plan, which is transforming bus travel across Lancashire.
"By creating modern facilities, centralising services and improving the passenger experience, we are helping to ensure Colne has a transport network that supports local regeneration, boosts the town centre and better connects our communities for years to come.”
Pendle Borough Council, which owns Colne bus station together with others in the borough, are supporting the improvement works.
Councillor David Whipp, Leader of Pendle Borough Council, said: "We are committed to improving facilities for bus passengers and to encourage greater use of public transport.
"We are hoping that these new facilities will provide a massive boost for passengers and waiting for buses in Colne will be a more comfortable experience.
"We look forward to the completion of work this spring."
The improvements have been made been possible thanks to funding from HM Government’s Bus Service Improvement Plan fund.
