Nelson business fined for seven food hygiene offences

A business in Nelson has been charged with seven food hygiene offences and fined a total almost £20,000.

The case against A & H Halal Meat Limited at 63 Scotland Road, was heard at Burnley Magistrates’ Court.

The company was fined £14,000 and ordered to pay £3,824 in costs, plus a £2,000 victim surcharge.

Contrary to Regulation 19 of the Food Safety and Hygiene (England) Regulations 2013, A & H Halal Meat Limited failed to:

  • ensure that every person working in the food-handling area maintained a high degree of personal cleanliness and wore suitable, clean and, where necessary, protective clothing
  • ensure that all articles, fittings and equipment with which food comes into contact are constructed and kept in such good order, repair and condition as to minimise any risk of contamination
  • ensure that the premises were kept clean and maintained in good repair and condition
  • ensure that all articles, fittings and equipment with which food comes into contact were effectively cleaned and, where necessary, disinfected
  • put in place, implement and maintain a permanent procedure based on Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points principles
  • establish the traceability of food, feed, food producing animals and any other substance intended or expected to be incorporated into food or feed at all stages of production, processing and distribution
  • ensure that any documents describing the procedures were kept up-to-date at all times

Phillip Spurr, Pendle Borough Council’s Director of Place, said: “Businesses which do not operate within the food safety legislations will not be tolerated.

“It’s vitally important that we protect customers from businesses which put people’s health at risk.

“Our Environmental Health team works hard to ensure the public’s safety; and is on hand to give businesses the advice they need to ensure they are providing the best possible service.”
