Lung cancer screening comes to Preston

People in Preston aged 55 to 74 who have ever smoked and are registered with a participating GP practice, will soon be invited for potentially life-saving lung cancer screening.

Lung cancer screening has been successfully rolling out across Lancashire and South Cumbria for the past four years. Since the programme’s launch, over 106,000 people have been invited for screening, and over 330 lung cancers have been detected - 73% of those at an early stage, where lung cancer is easier to treat.

Eligible individuals will receive an invitation letter through the post with instructions on how to book an appointment.

Those eligible will then have a telephone appointment with a nurse, to discuss their breathing, lifestyle, and family and medical history. They may then be offered a low-dose CT scan at a mobile scanning unit located conveniently in Preston.

Dr John Howells, Clinical Director for lung cancer screening in Lancashire and South Cumbria urges all those invited to come for screening, said: “Following great success in Blackpool, Blackburn with Darwen, East Lancashire and Fylde and Wyre, we are delighted to now offer lung cancer screening to people in Preston and encourage everyone who receives an appointment to attend – even if they feel well.

“There are often no signs or symptoms of lung cancer at an early stage, which is why it’s often diagnosed too late to be cured.

"Thanks to screening, we are now seeing more people than ever before diagnosed earlier and successfully treated for lung cancer, often before any symptoms have developed.”

Over the coming months, local residents are invited to attend awareness events hosted by the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation. These events offer a chance to learn more about lung cancer screening and ask any questions they might have.

Paula Chadwick, Chief Executive of Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, said: “We are delighted to be working with Lancashire and South Cumbria Cancer Alliance to promote the importance of screening.”

“When lung cancer is caught early, it is possible to cure. We need people to know this so fear doesn’t stop them taking up this potentially life-saving opportunity.”
