A man has been charged with murder after a prisoner was found deceased at HMP Garth.
Lancashire Police were called to HMP Garth, Ulnes Walton, at 9.08am on 13th July 2025, to a report of a sudden death.
Officers attended and Tony Joynes, 47, was found deceased in his cell.
An investigation was launched by the Force Major Investigation Team, and a prisoner aged in his 30s was arrested at HMP Garth on 22nd July 2025 on suspicion of murder.
Following consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service, police charged Shaun Newton, 35, with the murder of Mr Joynes.
Newton, who remains in the custody of the prison service, was due to appear before Preston Magistrates Court today (Thursday 26th March).
