Neil Atherton, affectionately known as the “Bus Walker,” is gearing up for his first challenge of 2025.
The long-serving Arriva employee and charity fundraiser will be embarking on an ambitious 50-mile walk in a single day, aiming to raise much-needed funds for food banks across Merseyside and Halton.
Neil’s route will take him between six Arriva bus depots, a fitting nod to his 25 years of service with the company. Adding a distinctive twist to the challenge, Neil will be pushing a specially modified trolley designed to look like an Arriva bus, reflecting his passion for both his job and his community.

The challenge is driven by Neil’s determination to shine a light on the growing issue of food poverty. The funds raised will go to various charities and organisations that support families and individuals in need, providing essential food and supplies.
This isn’t Neil’s first time taking on such a feat. In 2022, he completed a gruelling 100-mile walk, earning admiration from his colleagues and the wider community. Back in 2020, he walked an astonishing 150 miles, raising over £5,000 for good causes. His unique approach to fundraising and his tireless efforts to make a difference have cemented his status as a local hero.
Speaking about the upcoming challenge, Neil said: “Food poverty is a growing issue in our communities, and I want to do my bit to help those who are struggling. This walk is about raising awareness and funds to support the incredible work being done by food banks in our region.”
As the day approaches, Neil is busy preparing for the physical and logistical demands of his 50-mile journey, which he aims to complete within 24 hours. He hopes his efforts will encourage others to support the cause, either through donations or by backing their local food banks.
Neil Atherton’s determination and generosity remain an inspiration, proving that one person’s commitment can make a real difference to the lives of others.
