Families invited to climb aboard Preston’s festive steam train for a magical journey with Father Christmas this December
The unmistakable hiss of steam, the scent of coal, and the sound of festive carols will once again fill Preston Docklands this December as the Ribble Steam Railway’s much-loved Santa Specials return for the 2025 Christmas season.
Running on selected dates from 30 November to 22 December, the heritage railway will transform into a winter wonderland, offering families a nostalgic day out aboard a real working steam train.

Each Santa Special trip lasts around an hour, during which passengers travel along the Ribble Steam Railway and enjoy a three-mile journey, taking in unique views across the River Ribble and Preston’s historic docklands. Once on board, children can look forward to a personal visit from Father Christmas, who will make his way through the vintage carriages delivering individually chosen presents to every child. The festive atmosphere continues throughout the journey, with traditional decorations, Christmas music and cheerful volunteers in seasonal costume bringing the spirit of the season to life.

Before or after their journey, families can explore the Ribble Steam Museum, which will be decked in tinsel and twinkling lights for the occasion. Visitors can also stop by Mrs Ribble’s Tea Room for mince pies, cakes and hot chocolate, or post a wish list in the special “Santa Mail” post box. Light refreshments are included with every ticket, and the museum’s shop will offer festive souvenirs and railway-themed gifts.
Departures for the 2025 season are scheduled for 10:30 am, 11:55 am, 1:20 pm, 2:45 pm and 4:10 pm, with tickets priced at £20 per person. Children’s ages and genders are requested at booking to help Santa’s helpers prepare the right gift. Tickets often sell out quickly, so visitors are advised to book early via www.ribblesteam.org.uk/santa-special
The Santa Specials are a highlight of the Ribble Steam Railway calendar, drawing visitors from across Lancashire and beyond. The attraction itself is a volunteer-run heritage railway, founded in 2005 on the site of Preston’s former dock railway lines. Managed by the Ribble Steam Railway & Museum Trust, the organisation preserves and operates a collection of historic locomotives and rolling stock, supported by an enthusiastic community of volunteers.
Those wishing to get more involved can join as a member of Ribble Steam Railway and if they wish, can then volunteer to help with everything from engine restoration to event days and education sessions. For many, the annual Santa Specials symbolise the perfect blend of nostalgia, family fun and festive spirit—a reminder that, even in the modern age, the magic of Christmas still travels best by steam.
