Lancashire man's 24-hour deadlift challenge in aid of Firefighters Charity

A Lancashire on-call firefighter spent 24 hours continuously lifting weights in a gym to raise funds for the Firefighters Charity.

Glen Bailey lifted just under 500,000kg in 24 hours – raising over £1,800 in the process.

Glen, 42, who works as an industrial firefighter with Mitie Emergency Response Service and an on-call firefighter with Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service at Darwen Fire Station, lifted weights almost continuously between 10am on 7 January and the same time on 8 January  – and his total lifted came to 478,139.6kg.

SAS gym in Leyland, Lancashire, invited Glen to do the challenge on the gym floor, with members of the public welcomed in to watch and donate.

“I took on this mammoth challenge to try to raise funds and awareness for The Fire Fighters Charity, who do great work helping to support firefighters both past and present as well as their families by providing a broad range of health and wellbeing services,” says Glen.

“I know people that have had support, particularly in my industrial role. One guy went through a tough time and he had mental health support, while I know a few in Lancashire who have had rehabilitation following injuries too.

“It’s a charity you always want to support, because as firefighters, we never know when we might need help ourselves.

“I really enjoyed the challenge. Through completing the full 24 hours, I got something really good out of it myself – while raising a lot of money.

“I lifted just under 500,000kg, so I unfortunately missed out on the record, but I’m over the moon I completed the 24 hours.

“I knew there’d be challenging times and times I felt like giving up, so I was prepared for that, but it’s just about having that mental strength to carry on.”
