Leyland family firm embraces smart-home revolution as demand for automated living grows

From smartphone-controlled blinds to motorised garden awnings, a Lancashire family business is seeing technology transform the way people think about their homes.

The rise of smart-home technology is reaching almost every corner of our homes, and one Leyland business is combining the latest innovations with a traditional, personal approach to customer service.

Family-run Solis Blinds, based in Leyland, supplies and installs a wide range of shutters, blinds and awnings for homes and businesses across the North West and beyond.

While choosing window coverings might once have been largely about colour and fabric, the company says customers are increasingly interested in automation, with blinds and awnings now capable of integrating with wider smart-home systems.

Smartphone connectivity and dedicated hubs can allow homeowners to incorporate motorised blinds alongside other connected technology around the home.

But despite the growing role of technology, Solis Blinds says finding the right solution still often requires something decidedly more traditional: visiting the customer.

The company operates a showroom in Leyland where customers can explore different products, fabrics and finishes, but the team also carries out home visits to understand individual properties and offer advice.

Sometimes, the product a customer initially has in mind may not be the most suitable option for their home.

The range extends from traditional vertical and wooden Venetian blinds through to contemporary vision blinds, shutters and automated systems. Child safety is another consideration, with wand-operated blinds available to remove the need for potentially hazardous operating cords.

Outdoor living is also becoming an increasingly important part of the business.

Motorised awnings can be operated at the touch of a button, with options including integrated LED lighting and a wide selection of water-resistant fabrics.

And they're not restricted to homes. Solis Blinds also works with pubs, restaurants, cafés and other commercial premises.

For properties where installing an awning might initially appear difficult because of height or structural considerations, bespoke engineering solutions can sometimes provide an answer, with the company working with other local firms to manufacture specialist brackets where required.

Keeping things local is an important part of the company's approach.

Alongside being a family-run operation, Solis Blinds supports a local football team, works with charities and uses other businesses in the region as part of its supply and manufacturing network.

Customers can visit the Leyland showroom to see the range for themselves, while examples of completed installations and further information are also available through the company’s website and social media channels.
