Blackpool’s newest attraction is nearing completion and already proving to have true blue appeal.
The Upside Down House, which was given planning approval by Blackpool Council last month, is being built on the site previously occupied by the Theatre D’amour, just to north the South Pier, following the demolition of the puppet theatre in December.
The two-storey structure is designed to appear to be upside down on its roof with a slight angle, creating novel scenarios with selfie opportunities inside, such as a bed appearing to be on the ceiling.
Work on the wooden structure began last week and now it has been given an Ocean Blue exterior, to uniquely reflect Blackpool’s seaside setting. Other houses across the country have different coloured exteriors – Liverpool’s is red – and bespoke interiors as well.
Reactions from Blackpool residents were initially mixed when construction first got under way last week, with some labelling it “an eyesore” and a “white elephant”, while others said they were looking forward to it opening.
But now the house, the latest of 16 across the country opened by Upside Down UK Ltd, looks more like the finished product.
Construction is designed to be quick and easy and the Upside Down House is expected to open to the public at the end of this month and be in place for three years.
The online ticket price will be £8.45 per person, while the very young (ages 0–3) go free.
The expected ‘dwell time’ is to be between 30 and 40 minutes.
Planning papers in support of the application said: “The Upside-Down House has a maximum height of approximately 7 metres, a depth of 13 metres and a width of 11 metres and is finished in ‘Ocean Blue’ colour, which compliments South Pier and the adjoining Sandcastle.
“The house will have wheelchair friendly pathways, allowing ease of access into the house and stands on a pre-cast concrete foundation that can be dismantled, returning the terrace to normal in as little as two days.”
The statement adds: “The Upside-Down represents a significant tourist attraction that will enhance the existing offer of Blackpool.”
