Works to remodel the junction of School Road and Common Edge Road are nearing completion.
To safely complete the resurfacing an overnight road closure will be required to the junction of School Road and Common Edge Road. Road closures at the junction will take place from Monday 26 January 2026 for five nights between 6.00pm and 5.00am, weather permitting.
Once the resurfacing works are completed, installation of the new traffic signal equipment can begin. The planned completion of the junction works is expected for the end of February 2026.
The improved junction will reduce congestion for local road users by reducing it from four-way to three-way signals, as well as creating a filter lane from School Road onto Common Edge Road.
The upgrades will help speed up the signal cycles and maintain the flow of traffic in the area as well as enabling access to the Enterprise Zone using the new through road, Vickers Way, to Amy Johnson Way.
The junction works form part of the ongoing wider plans to create a new access road from Common Edge Road to Blackpool Enterprise Zone on Amy Johnson Way. Once fully open this spring the new road will unlock prime development land, allowing for businesses to grow and creating valuable job opportunities for local residents.
Cllr Mark Smith, Blackpool Council’s Cabinet Member for Economy and Built Environment, said: “I’m pleased to see the works on Common Edge Road are nearing completion. The improvements will make a real difference for everyone who uses this busy junction.
"By completing the most disruptive work overnight, we’re doing everything we can to keep traffic in the area moving while delivering long-term benefits for local residents and businesses.
“Once fully open the new layout and access road will help reduce congestion while also supporting the continued growth of the Enterprise Zone, bringing more job opportunities for local residents and helping us make Blackpool better.
‘’We already have a number of local companies interested in expanding on to the expanded Enterprise Zone, which promises to be one of the best business destinations for jobs in the North West.”
The works are being carried out by George Cox and Sons as part of Blackpool Council's £18.5m expansion to the Enterprise Zone designed to create more jobs in the area.
Funding for the new access road has been supported by a £7.5m grant from the UK Government, as part of the Blackpool Town Deal awarded in 2022.
