New Upside Down House attraction under construction

A new attraction for Blackpool is already causing a stir as it takes shape during ongoing construction.

The Upside Down House, which was given planning approval by Blackpool Council last month, is being built on the site previously occupied by the Theatre D’amour, just to north the South Pier, following the demolition of the puppet theatre in December.

The attraction is a two-storey structure which is designed to appear to be upside down on its roof with a slight angle, creating novel scenarios with selfie opportunities inside, such as a bed appearing to be on the ceiling.

A first-time novelty for Blackpool, the Upside Down House has already proved a major success across the UK and Europe.

The nearest one is in Liverpool – the first one in the North West – and is finished in red and white colours, with an interior unique to the Mersey city.

Blackpool’s house will have an Ocean Blue exterior, to reflect its seaside setting.

When will it open?

Construction of these portable structures is designed to be quick and easy and the Upside Down House is expected to open to the public next month and be place for three years.

At the Liverpool attraction, visiting times for customers last beween 15 and 20 minutes, allowing for plenty of photos to be taken. Blackpool’s house is expected to operate along similar lines.

Blackpool’s planning officer wasn’t a hundred percent behind the project, raising concerns about the ‘piecemeal’ nature of the proposals.

However, other factors weighed in its favour and the planning application was unanimously approved by councillors on the planning committee, who felt it would be a useful entertainment draw for Blackpool.

Planning papers in support of the application said: “The Upside-Down House has a maximum height of approximately 7 metres, a depth of 13 metres and a width of 11 metres and is finished in ‘Ocean Blue’ colour, which compliments South Pier and the adjoining Sandcastle.

“The house will have wheelchair friendly pathways, allowing ease of access into the house and stands on a pre-cast concrete foundation that can be dismantled, returning the terrace to normal in as little as two days.”

The statement adds: “The Upside-Down represents a significant tourist attraction that will enhance the existing offer of Blackpool.”
